11 hours of Progress

Yes I’ve been sitting at my computer working on this project since 6:30 am…apparently the time got away from me even with the extra hour lol.

Howdy Folks!

Here’s a quick update on the sketch model…which has evolved into a full scene :-) :

After blocking in the basic structures I did a bit of detailing. I got carried away with the bolts at one point but I reeled it in only to decide that an LED floor is now a must have instead of a maybe in this room lol. 198 meticulously named tiles later I have this:

Other things that were added today: track lights, dome security cameras, and a new wall anchor for the door. There are still a few things to sketch/ model out but I hope to start lighting before next weekend :-) That’s all for now, stay tuned for more sketches, updates and general nonsense. Peace!

Nuts and Bolts

Howdy Folks!

The sketch modeling continued this morning with the addition of a few pieces and the beginnings of the vault hallway/room. I made the hinge base with a series of boolean operations and my husband just informed me that I made an engon in the process and the mesh on it is going to be a mess u_u(). At least I can use it as a guide to box model the piece (the right way lol).

I’m also finding that what works in 2d doesn’t necessarily work in 3d. *cough cough hinge* But I am enjoying the problem solving aspect and how learning this new skill is informing my drawing process. Here’s the progress so far:

Story boards for the animation (ambitious I know but I figure I might as well “go big or go home”) are in the thumbnail stage at this point but I have a pretty good idea of what I’d like to do. :-) (think tron + star trek + mission impossible 1 and particles galore)

That’s all for now, more updates and sketches to come! Peace out Folks!

Roughin’ It

Howdy folks, and welcome to the new webspace!

Things are still a bit under construction-ish but I’ll be making updates and changes over the next week or so. Speaking of changes, I got married this past September (hence the absence from the blogosphere and the new last name :-D ). Don’t panic, the old blog will still be up and functional for those of you who like archives as well as the new and shiny.

The last time I blogged I was fiddling around with Vue and complaining about openGL being slower than an old lady at the supermarket looking for hairnets and dog food which are never in the same aisle. (as usual, bonus points if you catch the reference, triple points if you spell it right! lol). I’ve since moved to 3ds Max and seen the light that is Vray (puns intended always). I’ve been bumbling my way through courses on Digital Tutors (highly recommend)  and I’m finally confident enough with the program to make a project of my own.

It started with my mom needing a security themed illustration for the cover of a textbook she and my dad wrote and are marketing early next year. After a few doodles of creepy burglars and prison bars we decided a futuristic vault door would do nicely (and then I decided to model, texture, light and animate it after the fact ;-) ):

I’m still working some things out on paper but I couldn’t wait to take it into max so I’ve been building sketch models. It’s like leggos but way better because I can actually build the shape I want :-D …ok maybe it’s not exactly like leggos but that’s all I have to compare it to lol. here’s some of my progress – it’s a bit grainy…this was before I knew about the print screen button lol (cut me some slack I’m a reformed Mac!):

And that’s what’s up in my studio this week! (year?? I dunno this project will probably take a while lol) Stay tuned for updates and sketches, peace out folks! :-D
